Milwaukee Avenue set to open

But mayor doubts it will hit Thursday’s deadline

Work on the Milwaukee Avenue construction project is supposed to be wrapped up today.

“It is, but I have my doubts,” said City of Burlington Mayor Bob Miller on Tuesday. “Looking at what’s left to be done, I’m not sure they can get it done by the 15th.

“They think they can, so that’s what we’re going with.”

Among the items still being finished on the road earlier this week included getting grass back in along the new curbing, as well as a handful of concrete pours – including that at the intersection of Milwaukee and Maryland avenues.

However, in traveling up and down the road Tuesday afternoon, it was clear that most of the work was done. Details – including entrances to a number of businesses – still needed to be addressed.

Miller said that while he doubted the work would be finished by today, he was optimistic it would be by the end of the week.

And he was looking forward to it.

“Like you wouldn’t believe,” Miller said. “It was an ambitious project. We knew it was ambitious when we did it, but it was something that needed to be done.

“I’m just glad to see it over with.”

Other construction projects throughout the city are also reaching conclusion, Miller said, pointing to the end of the week as their probable finish as well.
