New roof eyed for fire station

The City of Burlington fire station will get a new roof this year.

On Tuesday the City Council unanimously approved contract with Carlson Racine Roofing in the amount of $21,960.

That amount will cover the cost of reroofing the center section of the building that covers the department’s apparatus bays.

A memo prepared by Fire Chief Richard Lodl said that section of the roof is now starting to leak and has reached the end of its useful life.

The original fire station was built in 1969. An addition was constructed in 1992 on the west side of the building and all the roofs were replaced at that time, according to Lodl.

Portions of the roof that cover the offices and meeting rooms, and the training room began leaking and were repaired in 2007 and 2008, leaving the center section as the only original roof portion.

The expense was included in the city’s 2012 budget. The contracted price is approximately 61 percent of the budgeted amount.
