With a change authorized to the contract of City of Burlington Police Chief Peter Nimmer, signs pointed to the city keeping the chief.

Last week, Nimmer was announced as one of four finalists for the top spot in Whitefish Bay. Speculation was that Nimmer would be closer to his home in Jackson, and with his wife working in the area, the offer might be more appealing.

However, the contract change came about after a closed session of the City of Burlington Common Council, and changed residency requirements.

According to Mayor Bob Miller, the change in the contract means that Nimmer will no longer be required to establish residency in Burlington or within 20 miles of the city.

However, the contract change will also require that, if Nimmer does sell his home in Jackson, he will be required to reside in Racine, Kenosha, Walworth, Waukesha or Milwaukee counties.

With that change to his contract, Miller said all indications were that Nimmer would be staying as the city’s chief.

“It is my belief that the change to his contract will ensure Chief Nimmer stays with the City of Burlington,” said Miller following closed session Tuesday night.

Nimmer could not be reached for comment following the meeting. Earlier in the day, he had confirmed he was one of the four finalists for the Whitefish Bay job, but offered no further comment.
