Veronico’s co-owner Maria Veronico confirmed Tuesday afternoon that the final day of operation for the downtown Burlington restaurant will be Thursday, May 24.
She said the three owners – her, Dr. Thomas Niccolai and Loretta Jackson – have talked about the idea of getting out of the business for about a year, but a major factor in the decision was when head chef Jim Veronico, Maria’s son, was diagnosed with cancer in December of 2010, as well as a rare blood disorder.
The blood disorder forced him into the hospital for extended stays, leaving the restaurant without a chef at several key points. Jim is now in remission, but his absence and the weak economy sealed the deal, so to speak.
“We have been affected, admittedly, by chains,” Maria Veronico said. “With that in mind … it’s been nine years.
“Our lease is up at the end of July,” she added. “Honestly, we’re ready.”
She also said that family would be a continuing focus, as she is about to welcome her 12th grandchild into the world.
Jackson said the restaurant has served as a Burlington staple – a family-run restaurant that people appreciated.
“So many people have told me how disappointed they are,” Jackson said. “I think it’s reality and the signs of the time.”
Veronico said that a new owner would have to come forward quickly, because the business is planning a massive sale – of everything from dishware to tables to kitchen equipment – the first weekend of June (the first, second and third).
The restaurant is currently open 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
