BHS senior seeks change for Echo Lake fire fund

Burlington High School senior Jake Reetz decided his senior project needed to be more.

More to help those affected by the fire at Echo Lake Foods, that is.

Reetz has organized his DRIVEN community service project – which all seniors in the leadership program are now required to do – around fundraising Friday at the boys basketball game between BHS and Wilmot at 7 p.m.

The game will decide the Southern Lakes Conference crown, and Reetz – a member of the team – plans to use the large crowd to the advantage of others.

Everyone attending the game is asked to donate their loose change – from home, from their car, etc. – as they enter the gym for the game. Every person who donates change will receive a raffle ticket toward a drawing for a pizza party from Domino’s. The party consists of five large pizzas and 40 wings and is valued at more than $80.

There will also be a “Miracle Minute” at the end of the third quarter where several students will run through the gym to collect more donations. All money donated will go into the Echo Lake Fire Fund at Talmer Bank.

According to information released by Reetz’s mother, Beth, there are more than 20 students at BHS who have been affected by the fire.

“Jake is hoping that the community, students and fans will really support this fundraiser,” Beth Reetz said.
