The City of Burlington Common Council unanimously approved a number of resolutions, ordinances and motions Jan. 2 – including the re-zoning of property on Bridge Street to allow for a new apartment complex.

After a brief discussion about what aldermen needed to know and had jurisdiction over, the council voted unanimously on the rezone.

A recent letter to the editor in the Standard Press urging officials to turn down the rezoning drew commentary from Alderman Tom Preusker before the vote. Preusker said it was market competition that should determine whether or not the apartment building had a place in the city – not the City Council.

“I guess they need to compete just like everyone else.”

S.R. Mills, who owns the Bear Arbor apartment development in Burlington, hopes to launch a two-stage project, with 24 apartments in each phase, on the property at 200 Bridge Street.

Mills said plans are to start phase one of the project in the summer of 2013, if everything comes together as anticipated.

Other action

Also approved unanimously Wednesday night were three resolutions: to hire Wisconsin Humane Society to handle animal control services; an amendment to have Patrick Romenesko handle a second item in his 2012 audit; and the approval of Diahnn Halbach as the new City Clerk.

The City Council also approved changes to the city’s snowmobile trail map, which now matches up with what area clubs say exist in the area.
