Interviews to fill the open principal position at Winkler Elementary School began last week, and Burlington Area School District Superintendent Peter Smet hopes to have a choice by the end of this week.

Smet said  that eight people – three women and five men – were coming in for interviews July 10 for a panel that included Smet, Assistant Superintendent Connie Zinnen, other administrators and teachers and parents from Winkler School.

“It’s a team we put together,” said Smet.

From there, he hopes to select between two to four finalists and conduct second interviews with those candidates next week. From there, he hopes to have a replacement for Jennifer Barnabee – who left at the end of June to pursue a position in Illinois in her previous school district – by Friday.

BASD got more than 90 applicants for the position, mostly from Wisconsin.

“(It’s) a strong group,” Smet said. “We hope to have a very qualified candidate to bring to the board.”

Smet said he hopes the new principal would begin work on or around Aug. 1.
