City to provide sandbags for flood-impacted residents
High water from the Fox River forced City of Burlington officials to close portions of Riverside Park last week. With heavy rains predicted in the period beginning at noon Wednesday through Friday this week, officials with the National Weather Service’s Sullivan office have extended a flood watch for Racine County and a flood warning for Kenosha County in areas surrounding the Fox River. Total rainfall amounts of 2.5 to 3.5 inches are expected. People living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action.
In anticipation of this heavy rainfall, the City of Burlington will provide sand and bags to property owners within flood zones. Materials will be available for pickup at 834 Milwaukee Avenue (old Public Works facility) beginning at 6:30 a.m., Thursday, April 18. People should enter the site off of Maryland Avenue, bring their own shovels and be prepared to fill their own bags. Elderly or disabled residents who need assistance placing sandbags should contact City Hall at (262) 342-1168.
The National Weather Service has projected the Fox River flood level to be as high as 14.5 feet by April 20, 2013. This is 3.5 feet over flood stage. Property owners are encouraged to monitor the Fox and White River levels and expect increased flooding by the weekend. Flooding at this level will lead to street and park closures.
