Man charged with stalking following SWAT incident

A Burlington man who briefly holed up in his ex-girlfriend’s basement and allegedly threatened to slit her throat and kill their children May 26, was in jail this week awaiting court proceedings on multiple criminal charges.

Adam G. Floyd, 27, was captured by a Racine County Sheriff’s Deputy after apparently sneaking out of his girlfriend’s Bohners Lake area home as SWAT team members were moving in to set up perimeter around the residence.

Floyd remained in the Racine County Jail Wednesday. He made his initial appearance in court Tuesday where a judge set cash bond at $25,000 and ordered Floyd not to have contact with the victim or their four children.

He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on June 5 at which time the court is expected to decide whether there is probable cause to send the case to trial.

Floyd has been charged with felony stalking as well as three counts of telephone harassment and a single count of disorderly conduct with domestic abuse assessments. The latter charges are misdemeanors.

According to the criminal complaint and information released by the sheriff’s office:

The incident began May 23 when the victim traveled to the Walworth County Jail – where Floyd had been jailed with Huber release privileges – to tell him she was breaking up with him.

The victim called the sheriff’s department later that day to report that Floyd allegedly called her by phone 25 times and told her he was going to take the children away from her and slit her throat.

Deputies then learned that Floyd failed to return to the Walworth County Jail as required on May 23.

Officers were again dispatched to the victim’s home May 25 and 26 after she reported receiving more threatening phone calls.

Numerous squad cars were in the area of the home at 32905 Robers Street in the Town of Burlington May 26 when the victim reported receiving a phone call from Floyd about 9:30 p.m. saying he had been dropped off in the area. An hour later she called to report that Floyd was inside the residence and had gone into the basement where their children – ages 1 to 5 – were sleeping.

The victim told dispatchers that Floyd had a gun and allegedly threatened to kill the children. Despite the initial report of a gun, there is no mention of a weapon in the criminal complaint.

Additional officers and SWAT team members responded and set up a perimeter. However, after entering the home, authorities found the children unharmed still sleeping in the basement.

A deputy reportedly found Floyd hiding behind a neighboring home about 1:25 a.m. May 27 and arrested him following a brief foot chase.

The criminal complaint indicates Floyd has previously been convicted of felony burglary as well as misdemeanor battery and theft in Walworth County.

  1. Victims of stalking need much more than ‘tips’ or a piece of paper. They need trained volunteers and staff to work with them and the police to help document and record the stalking activity and hold stalkers accountable before damages and/or violence occur.
