Mouth-washing incident leads to abuse charge

Man allegedly knocked out girl’s teeth while disciplining her for swearing

A man who allegedly punished a 7-year-old girl for swearing by putting a bar of soap in her mouth has been charged with child abuse after the girl lost two teeth during the incident.

Samuel R. Martin Jr., 36, of Burlington was charged with physical abuse of a child – recklessly causing harm, a class I felony, stemming from the incident, which allegedly occurred June 5.

According to the criminal complaint filed in the case, the girl’s mother told police her daughter was behaving poorly and swore at Martin, who was the mother’s boyfriend at the time.

The mother told officers that Martin appeared angry and he then got some soap to punish the girl.

Martin told police he went to the girl’s bedroom and put the soap in her mouth, but didn’t realize she was injured until removing the soap and seeing she was missing a tooth and bleeding.

Martin appeared in court Aug. 22 where an official established $1,000 signature bond and ordered him to have no violent contact with the victim or her family. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 4.

Abuse charge filed

A Burlington man is charged with physical abuse of a child – intentionally causing bodily harm, a class H felony, for allegedly using excessive physical force to punish a 3-year-old boy.

Jesse J. Jahns, 23, was charged Aug. 22 in Racine County Circuit Court for incidents that allegedly occurred in March, April and May of this year.

The mother of the boy told police she had witnessed Jahns hitting the child in the past and said she took photos of injuries the child suffered as a result on at least three occasions.

The mother said she told Jahns he can’t hit the child in such a manner to which he allegedly stated that the child needed discipline.

The court issued an arrest warrant for Jahns Aug. 22 after he failed to appear for a scheduled court proceeding connected to the case.
