Investigation continues into incident on city’s south side

A 77-year-old Kansasville man died Sunday night at Froedtert Hospital following a pedestrian-vs.-car collision on South Pine Street Friday.
Joseph W. Hauswirth died following blunt force trauma to the neck, head, back, abdomen, chest and upper and lower extremities, according to the Racine County Medical Examiner. An autopsy was conducted Monday in Milwaukee County.
According to City of Burlington Police Chief Peter Nimmer, the incident happened Friday evening around 6:40 p.m. Hauswirth was walking westbound across South Pine Street to the condominiums across from Kwik Trip on Hidden Creek Lane.
A vehicle driven by a 65-year-old Crystal Lake, Ill., woman going southbound on South Pine struck him. The woman was on scene when police arrived, and Hauswirth was taken to Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington by ambulance, and later transferred to Froedtert.
Nimmer declined to release the name of the driver, saying the incident is still under investigation.
An obituary for Hauswirth is on page 5 of this edition. The family extended a thank you to the staff at the Trauma ICU and surgical unit at Froedtert.
Nimmer said Tuesday that it is too early to know whether alcohol or other contributing factors played a part in the accident.
“It’s still truly under investigation,” he said, adding that the Wisconsin State Patrol is assisting city police in recreating the scene and investigating it, and that the investigation could “take weeks, if not months.”
“What has to happen is we have to, with the assistance of the state patrol, reconstruct the scene,” Nimmer explained. “We have to get the warrants. We have to make the determination of whether anybody is at fault, at which point we have to potentially refer the case to the district attorney’s office for further charges.”
