Burlington Area School District schools will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 28, in response to predicted sub-zero cold.
Superintendent Peter Smet said parents were to be informed of the closing by the district’s automated telephone message system on Monday afternoon.
Wind chills in the area are expected to plunge into the 35-45 below zero range Monday night into Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service office in Sullivan. A wind chill advisory is in effect until 9 p.m. Monday, at which point a wind chill warning will be in effect until noon on Tuesday.
According to Smet, district officials were holding out hope that schools would be open Monday, but the decision was made to close after the impact of blowing and drifting snow on rural roads was considered.
Whenever school is closed, all school-related activities, including School Board meetings, are cancelled.
