Burlington family that championed cause stands by and governor signs legislation
Gov. Scott Walker on Wednesday signed a bill that legalizes the limited use of cannabidiol (CBD) to treat people with seizure disorders.
CBD – which has been shown effective against seizures in states where it’s allowed – is derived from marijuana. That fact alone made it a hot-button issue for many people.
The bill was championed by Burlington residents Sally and Tom Schaeffer, whose daughter, Lydia, suffers from seizures.
Although the bill was thought to have little chance of passage when it was introduced this past session, it benefited from grassroots support – led by the Schaeffers and other parents of seizure-prone children – and eventually won over lawmakers as well.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, was among first lawmakers to express support for the bill.
Vos and the entire Schaeffer family were on hand Wednesday when Walker signed the bill.
