Teacher retirements eliminate need for layoff notices

BASD will reduce staff for 2014-15 through attrition

When the Burlington Area School District approaches the state-mandated deadline for initial notices of non-renewal this month, it won’t need to send any.

Superintendent Peter Smet said April 14 that the district would not have to layoff any staff members for the 2014-15 school year.

The reason is because the district will eliminate several positions through retirements. Included in the latest, announced at the monthly School Board meeting, was that of long-time Burlington High School history teacher Steve Gerber.

There have also been a number of recent resignations within the district, including BHS physics teacher Cory Militzer, who is leaving to take a position with an academy in Florida.

  1. Congratulating one of the best teachers and coaches in Burlington on his retirement. Enjoy Mr. Gerber.

  2. Cory is one of the best. We have been blessed to have such a fine teacher and example for our children. Hopefully Burlington can continue to attract professionals of his stature.

So by not replacing the teachers who are retiring, now we have to increase class sizes AGAIN!!!! Here, lets toss more students into a class that already has way too many kids in it. Way to go BASD, I can see you are really concerned about our kids education and the sanity of our current teachers. My prediction, BASD will be crying in 5 years that they need more teachers and can’t find qualified persons to fill the void. Word travels fast in the education circles, and when you treat your staff like second class citizens, they find other jobs where they get treated like human beings!!!

So … BHS has already posted the positions for Science and Social Studies to replace Mr. Militzer and Mr. Gerber . Where are the cuts going to happen? What positions are not being filled this time? Which classes will be larger, what opportunities will our children not have? This article does not give the wholes story. Please finish the story and show us the whole picture.

  5. Oooohh, those poor poor teachers!
