Kendall Street will be rebuilt this summer

The City of Burlington will embark on $1.4 million in street and sidewalk repairs this construction season with the lion’s share of the cost going to the reconstruction of Kendall Street.
The Common Council at its April 5 meeting approved a resolution setting the project in motion.
The council voted to award the project to Reeseman’s Excavating and Grading of Burlington, the low bidder.
The entire project comes within the cost estimates prepared by the village engineer and included in the 2017 municipal budget, according to Bergles.
The Kendall Street project includes the installation of water and sewer lines as well as reconstruction of the street surface, according to a memo prepared by Public Works Director Jim Bergles.
The cost breakdown is as follows: $782,003 for roadway items; $506,306 for sanitary sewer items; and $114,386 for water service items.
An additional $27,688 is slated for sidewalk repair at several different locations in the city.
The council hosted a public hearing April 5 on the sidewalk repair program for residents who will have to pay the cost of repairs to sidewalks along their properties.
A total of 26 properties are included in the project. Those properties include nine parcels on North Kane Street; 12 parcels on South Kane Street; and one parcel each along Adams, East Market, Mary and McHenry streets, and Westridge Avenue.
The owners of those properties – including St. Mary Catholic Parish – received a letter notifying them of the special assessment for the cost of the work.
As has been the longstanding practice in Burlington, the city will split the cost of the sidewalk work with the property owners. The total property owners’ share of the project is $13,844.
The property owners have the option of paying their portion of the total at once or in three annual installments with an interest rate of 3.5 percent, according to Bergle’s memo on the project.
