Not only did a local man get to see his favorite team win a tight game over a division rival, but the home run that ultimately won the game also won him a new car.
Mark Gruber, a retired teacher from the Burlington area, has quite the tale to tell about Sunday’s game when Milwaukee Brewers second-baseman Mike Moustakas cracked a home run that landed on top of a Toyota RAV4 parked in stands above centerfield.
Gruber’s tale of timing and good fortune is among the front-page stories in this week’s edition of the Burlington Standard Press.

Here’s a look at some of the other stories in this week’s Standard Press:
- DEMONS END STATE TOURNEY RUN: After well-played victory in their opening game, the Burlington High School baseball team took sky-high hopes into their WIAA Division 1 state semifinal game against Sun Prairie Tuesday evening. Those hopes were dashed, however, in a flurry of early mistakes from which the Demons never recovered. Nevertheless, Burlington has the honored distinction of playing in the tournament four straight years.
- VIEW FROM ABOVE: The Liars’ Club bar in downtown Burlington has ventured outdoors with a second-floor balcony that is beckoning patrons to enjoy their food and drinks with a fresh breeze and a view of the city.
- FAREWELL GRADS: Burlington High School bid adieu to 253 graduates, who leave the school after already compiling a total of 1,697 college credits.
- HONORS AND DRAMA: The theater programs at Burlington and Catholic Central high schools will get a parade through the city Friday – an honor usually reserved for state-champion athletic teams. The reason, according to Mayor Jeannie Hefty, is the unusually high number of Jerry Awards – the state’s high school equivalent of Tony Awards – earned by the programs this year.
- OPPORTUNITY OUTDOORS: Several area businesses, including Bob’s Pedal Pusher in Burlington, are doing their best to capitalize on a growing hunger for outdoor adventure. See the story in this week’s business section.
