Common Council approves improvement contracts

Improvements to Riverside Park are on the horizon after the Burlington Common Council approved two work orders with Ayres Associates at Tuesday’s meeting.
The work orders allow Ayres Associates to assist the city with upgrading its Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan along with design and construction management services for Riverside Park improvements.
According to Director of Public Works Peter Riggs, the comprehensive plan is a document that offers a vision for the future of the city’s development and maintenance of the city’s park system, which requires an update every five years.
The document offers a glimpse of outdoor amenities and identifies long-term challenges and opportunities for growth, Riggs said.
The city’s first CORP was created in 1996 and received updates in 2010 and 2014.
“The document is critical for securing grant funding, such as the recently awarded DNR Stewardship Grant for the Riverside Park improvements,” Riggs said at a March 5 Committee of the Whole meeting.
The grant, Riggs said, will cover about 50 percent of the total estimated cost of $160,000 for the Riverside Park improvements.
The upgrades will consist of replacing an aging pavilion, installation of a canoe/kayak launch and shoreline restoration.
Riggs told the Common Council the new pavilion will mirror the structure at Wehmhoff-Jucker Park on the opposite side of the river.
Collectively, the two work orders will cost $35,214 and were already included in the 2019 budget.
