The Burlington Area School District Board of Education in a divided vote at Monday’s special meeting decided to lift its mask mandate and make the COVID-19 mitigation tool optional for students and staff members.

The decision, which came on a 5-2 vote, applies to summer school, athletic programs, community education programs as well as organizations using district buildings.

“Since the pandemic began in March 2020, the district has been focused on the overall well-being of students, staff, and the community,” the district wrote on its website.

“This will continue to be BASD’s focus for people participating in district-affiliated summer programs.”

The district further stated its plans to continue encouraging hand washing/sanitizing and social distancing during programming.

While the mask mandate has been lifted, there are some exceptions, including a federal requirement that face coverings be worn on mass transportation.

“Students traveling by school bus, for example, student-athletes traveling to a competition, will still need to wear a mask while on the bus,” the district states.
