The music education support organization Music Matters will sponsor a series of workshops Saturday during the Tall Tales Music Festival in downtown Burlington.
The organization provides support and funding for music programs in Burlington schools and the greater community.
Here’s a look at the schedule of the organization’s sponsored programs for Saturday:
Move, Sing, and Play! An Exploratory Music Experience!
Wehmoff Park gazebo, 10-10:45 a.m.
Join Sarah Flygare, an elementary and middle school music teacher in the Burlington area, for fun games, silly songs, and movement activities. This workshop is targeted for children ages 5-12, however all are welcome.
Pint Size Polkas: Music and Magic from the Animal Kingdom
(Main stage, Chestnut Street, 11:30 a.m. -12:15 p.m.)
Mike Schneider’s music will have participants of all ages singing, clapping, and dancing along to such favorites as the “Chicken Dance.” But, the program is so much more than music. It’s magic, comedy, and education rolled into one fluid, high-energy musical package.
Age-appropriate trivia questions, jokes, and a special edition of Name That Tune will relate back to our furry – and sometimes not so furry – friends, from Babe the Blue Ox’s use of the Great Lakes as his own personal watering hole, to the theme song from “Jurassic Park.” One lucky adult will even have the chance to participate in a special Babe the Blue Ox-mimicking magic trick that will make the water inside a plastic cup disappear.
Ukulele for Beginners
(Thrivent Financial, 12-12:45 p.m.)
Have you always wanted to try playing the ukulele? Or maybe you purchased one with great intentions of learning, but it’s been gathering dust? This is your chance to learn the basics of playing the uke. You can be the star at the next family campfire…or add some ambience to your next trip to the beach. Organizers do have some ukuleles that may be borrowed during the workshop for those who do not already have their own. Please contact Rebecca Ivkovich at [email protected] to reserve your spot. Limited to 16 participants.
Discrete Beats
(Thrivent Financial, 1-1:45 p.m.)
Bruce Carroll (who performs as Sun Didj) invites people to participate in an hour-long workshop building beats and creating music with a variety of instruments, including didgeridoo, chimes, guitar, harmonica, maraca, recorder, singing bowls, tongue drum, and vocals. Those who have an instrument of their own are welcome to bring it along. Others should feel free to find something that will work as an instrument: an old frying pan and a wooden spoon, a duck call, a kid’s toy – anything that can be used to make a sound. Or just bring yourself. Didj will have plenty of instruments to share.
Suggested ages are 10 to adult. Email Bruce at [email protected] to reserve a spot. The workshop is limited to 10 participants, but observers welcome.
Village Drum Circle
(Wehmoff Park gazebo, 2-3 p.m.)
Local favorite “Village Drum” is returning to Tall Tales to celebrate life, community, family, friendships and music making. Participants will sit in a circle playing drums and hand percussion to create a group rhythm. A facilitator will guide the group in rhythms, rhythm-based activities and games. Bring your own drum or use ours, no experience needed. All ages welcome.
