Fire trucks blaring sirens roared through downtown Burlington Monday to celebrate the special achievements of two Little League teams.
The teams, according to Burlington Mayor Jeannie Hefty, produced remarkable seasons resulting in state championship appearances in late July.
The Burlington 10-11 All Stars won their state tournament played in Kenosha and the 9-10 All Stars finished as runner-up in their division in Wausau.
Hefty, in brief remarks following the parade at Wehmhoff Square Park, called their achievements special considering two teams from the same organization advanced to state championship contests.
“This is really special because we have two different teams who made it to the championship,” said Hefty as players and parents erupted in applause.
Typically, the city holds parades for teams of all levels, including high school, when a squad finishes as state champions or runner-ups.
The procession of fire engines from at least three departments – Rochester, Town of Burlington and City of Burlington – carrying the players began at Menards and traveled southwest on Milwaukee Avenue to Pine Street towards Wehmhoff Square Park.
Regardless of level, or age, Hefty said the accomplishments of both teams are something the community should take pride in.
“I am really proud of this and that is why we did so much with the fire trucks,” said Hefty.
Kevin Tomczyk, assistant coach for the state championship 10-11 team, said the procession was thrilling and thanked Hefty for her overwhelming support.
“Even though I am getting older, I still felt like a kid,” Tomczyk said of the fire truck ride. “It is still exciting.”
