      In recent days Racine County has earned the dubious distinction of returning to a high level of COVID-19 transmission.

The coronavirus, which has ebbed and flowed over the past two years, is again on the rise and Racine County is among the first counties in the state to cross back over to the high level category.

The story on the rise of the omicron variant is among the top stories in this week’s edition of the Burlington Standard Press.

MORE CHARGES: Racine County prosecutors leveled more charges against a former Burlington Area School District staff member accused of inappropriately touching female students at Dyer Elementary School. Daniel D. Powers, 57, initially charged with three counts of repeated sexual assault of the same child on April 27, now faces an additional three counts of the same charge as well as first-degree child sex assault.

COURT NEWS: A hearing was scheduled for May 18 for a Burlington man charged with a sixth drunken driving offense.

FAREWELL TO THE PALACE: Sandy and Dave Corbett are enjoying retirement after selling their Burlington tavern. The Palace was locally famous for its Friday fish fry.

TRACK CHAMPS: Burlington crowned three individual event champions at Tuesday’s Southern Lakes Conference Meet in Union Grove.
