It’s the second Wednesday of December and seventh- and eighth-grade students at Raymond School are waiting in the entryway to greet and guide senior citizens to breakfast.
Besides a delicious breakfast, that day the seniors enjoy entertainment or presentations by students of all ages. Students also serve the meal and update the seniors on school and extra-curricular activities. Sometimes they’ll entertain with singing or band or perform their numbers from the talent show.
This month’s breakfast featured scrambled eggs, waffles with strawberries and whipped cream, apple crisp, muffins, juice and coffee. There’s time to visit and catch up on news and local gossip.
At this month’s event, kindergarten students lined up to take their positions on the risers. Then, they sat quietly while band students played Christmas carols before stepping up to sing holiday songs from their concert that week.
Principal Joe Dawidziak talks with seniors about sharing their own talents and skills with students who are interested in learning outside the classroom – things like gardening, knit and crochet, woodworking, sheepshead and euchr card games, to name a few.
On the other side, students are interested in teaching seniors some skills that they’ve expressed an interest in learning—like computers.
This intergenerational exchange is in the early stages, gathering information to coordinate new learning opportunities for those interested in developing new skills or hobbies.
Raymond School hosts the senior citizen breakfasts for $3.50 on the second Wednesday of every month (April 2012’s will be the third Wednesday due to Spring Break) at 8:30 am.
Any Raymond senior interested in attending is welcome to call 262-835-2929 by the previous Friday to reserve a place.
