Village considers participating in recycling competition

Recycling could be a buzzword in Union Grove in the next few years if village officials move forward with a proposal to participate in an advocacy organization’s initiative to promote the virtues of green living.

Recyclebank and Johnson Wax have joined forces and are offering municipalities across the country an opportunity to participate in a recycling competition that would include participation from residents.

Robust details about the initiative were not readily available at the Village Board’s Administration/Finance Committee meeting Tuesday, but the two members in attendance agreed to forward the item on to the full board for further deliberation and possible action later this month.

If the full board grants the green light, the village could move forward with the application process.

Union Grove could potentially represent Wisconsin in the competition. If plans proceed, the village would likely have to commit two years toward the green project.

Committee member Tim Mallach, who learned the village could potentially participate in the competition, said there also is an opportunity to win up to $100,000 in grant money if the community does receive the green light.

“This is about getting the word out and encouraging people to recycle,” Mallach said.

Committee chairman Gordon Svendsen said he believes the recognition from Recyclebank and Johnson Wax is indicative of the village’s existing recycling policies.

“I think we do a good job, and that might be why they’re interested in us,” Svendsen said.

If plans do move forward, Clerk-Treasurer Janice Winget said she could include information with residents’ tax bills when they are mailed out next month.

If the village does participate in the project, there will not be any direct expenses from the effort.

The Village Board holds its next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, at the Union Grove Municipal Center, 925 15th Ave.
