A 46-year-old Sturtevant man is in custody, charged with first-degree reckless homicide in the shooting death of an Ohio man during an armed robbery in the Town of Yorkville in the early morning hours of Aug. 26.
Scott D. Mertins Sr. is facing up to 91 years in prison and fines of $85,000 after being charged with homicide, armed burglary, theft of a vehicle and possession of a firearm by a felon in Racine County Court Tuesday.
According to the criminal complaint, Mertins killed Robert G. Greene, 54, of Ironton, Ohio, while Greene was visiting friends in Yorkville, in a robbery at the farm of Mertins’ former employer.
The complaint states the Racine County Sheriff’s Department responded to reports of shots fired at a home on the 16000 block of Plank Road in Yorkville at about 2 a.m.
When deputies arrived, they found Greene laying in front of a pole barn, just outside an open overhead door. He was unresponsive and bleeding from the left shoulder/armpit area.
Greene was transported to Wheaton Franciscan All Saints Hospital in Racine where medical staff managed to get a pulse for a short time, but they were unable to maintain it and Greene was pronounced dead at about 3:40 a.m.
