The Union Grove Fourth of July Parade Committee reminds all parade participants to return the Details of Entry form by Saturday, June 15, so the parade line-up can be finalized.
The form can be downloaded from the Greater Union Grove Area Chamber of Commerce website at www.uniongrovechamber.org.
There is also still time to make a cash donation to help cover the expenses of the parade. Checks can be mailed to Union Grove Parade Committee; P.O. Box 44, Union Grove, WI 53182
This year’s theme is “Celebrating 175 Years” in honor of the Dodransbicentennial (175th anniversary) of Union Grove.
The parade begins at 9:15 a.m. with the singing of the Star Spangled Banner at several locations and a balloon launch of red, white and blue balloons.
The parade travels from the county fairgrounds on Highway 11 to the parking lot of Union Grove High School on Highway 45.
Kiddie Parade
A unique feature of the Union Grove parade is a Kiddie Parade for children ages 3-11 of decorated tricycles, bicycles, scooters, wagons and other non-motorized vehicles that precedes the main parade at 9 a.m. It travels two blocks from 12th and Main to the Village Square at 10th and Main streets.
Because participants will receive a parade souvenir, parents are asked to call Talmer Bank and Trust at 878-0951 to register their children. Participants should assemble in the parking lot of Talmer Bank by 8:45 a.m. Small children must be accompanied by a parent or another responsible person.
Essay contest winners
In honor of the 175th anniversary, an essay contest was held, open to all fifth through eighth grade students in Union Grove and the surrounding area schools.
• Margaret Rivest of Union Grove Elementary School is the eighth-grade winner. Her essay tells about the strong connections and relationships with neighbors in a smaller community, the beauty of the surrounding patchwork of farm fields and the opportunity for stargazing away from bright lights.
Maggie said: “My heritage, my family and my heart all reside in Union Grove, and I am proud and glad to call it home.”
• Mackenzie Pfeiffer of Union Grove Elementary School is the seventh-grade winner. She wrote that each season brings different things to do here: Santa riding on a fire engine to the Christmas tree lighting ceremony in winter; Fourth of July parade in summer; and Super Saturday and the start of school in fall.
Mackenzie said: “These memories along with many others are why I am proud to call Union Grove my home.”
• Paige Flannery of Yorkville School is the fifth- grade winner. She wrote about the excitement of the high school annual Homecoming game and festivities. Each received a $25 prize and will be featured in the Fourty of July Parade.
The parade is sponsored by the Bixby-Hansen American Legion Post 171 and the Greater Union Grove Area Chamber of Commerce.
