History Seekers of Union Grove will be taking over the Union Grove Village Hall on Super Saturday in September with displays and activities to commemorate the Village’s 175 years of existence.

After several months of dialogue between the Village and Union Grove Chamber of Commerce, a consensus about the celebration was reached June 10.

“They are working on bringing in other historical material, and staff the building for us,” Village President Mike Aimone said. “So that is taken care of.”

In April, Aimone came forward with the suggestion of holding an Open House after receiving feedback from the Chamber of Commerce. Super Saturday is an annual event held downtown featuring local bands and artists stressing the local culture of the Village.

The Village’s initial plans were to tie in the 175th anniversary with the Fourth of July Parade, but the History Seekers have been looking to further acknowledge the Village’s historical milestone.

In addition, Public Works Director Mark Osmundsen will work on creating a sign or banner that will be put in the front of the Village Hall for the remainder of 2013.

There is also the potential of modifying the Village’s official banner by adding the year “2013” and “175th Anniversary” to it.

Village Trustee Michael Younglove suggested replacing the banners used by local businesses with the commemorative flag.

“I think it will be cool because at the end of the year we can take it down and frame it,” Aimone explained. “Then we can display it (wherever needed).”

Osmundsen will also be working on adding official banners to street signs along State Highway 11, an idea that was discussed May 13.

Fourth of July

Monday night, Village Board members also confirmed they’ll be part of the Fourth of July parade and discussed the possibility of having a float designed.

Employees of the Village are exploring the option of wearing matching shirts together during the Independence Day parade.

The History Seekers’ mission is to preserve artifacts and history of the Village and be an educational resource to individuals living in the Village.

The non-profit and informal organization began to approach the Chamber of Commerce in early 2013 regarding the Village’s plan and have worked with Aimone.

Similar to the Village Hall sign and potential for a commemorative flag, the Village also plans to have the street banners on display until New Years Eve.
