Village of Union Grove Board members approved strategies and suggestions to add more moderate-priced and senior housing to Union Grove at their July 8 meeting.
The measure was approved after consideration of findings known as “Plan: 2035,” presented July 1 by the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (SEWRPC) at a meeting of Village Plan Commission members.
SEWRPC is the official metropolitan planning organization for seven counties in southeast Wisconsin, including Racine, Kenosha and Walworth.
The 2035 Plan document was adopted by SEWRPC in March 2013, and updates the regional housing plan adopted in 1975.
Housing that is affordable to low- and moderate-income households is the focus of the Plan, which also addresses housing needs of people with disabilities as well as subsidized/workforce/ fair/and best housing, according to the SEWRPC web site.
“What this Plan does is just reinforce what we have known all along,” Board President Mike Aimone said at Monday night’s Board meeting.
“We already knew there was a shortage of senior housing within the Union Grove community.”
Aimone had requested a more thorough breakdown of housing data from SEWRPC at the Plan Commission July 1 meeting, and said he was open to new ideas that will move the Village forward.
“It is going to give us a stronger case for developers for planning for the future with our housing in the community,” Aimone said.
Moderate-priced housing is in its highest demand, according to results presented by Nancy Anderson, a Chief Planner with SEWRPC, at the July 1 meeting.
Anderson will work with the Village on providing the information it has asked for. She hopes to submit the more thorough examination Aimone has requested some time in August.
