After accomplishing many great feats this year including performing a multiple award-winning musical at the Wisconsin High School Theatre Festival and creating Troupe 7878 in association with the International Thespian Society, Union Grove High School will be winding down its main stage season with a production of “Anne Frank and Me.”
The story follows a teenage girl named Nicole in the year 2013, who doubts the truth about the Holocaust and could care even less.
However, Nicole is involved in a freak accident, and when she recovers, she wakes up in Nazi-occupied Paris in 1942.
To make matters even more difficult, her and her entire family is Jewish. Nicole must learn what it means to live in fear and adapt to a world that thrives on hate.
Complications arise for Nicole throughout the story, and include an encounter with Anne Frank in the most horrifying of circumstances.
The story, while dealing with heavy elements, also has brief interludes of comedy as well. This is an extremely powerful show, and a first in Union Grove history.
This will mark the first occasion that the students depart from comedy and perform their first dramatic piece of theatre. Accuracy has been key throughout the production and students have also worked heavily with Rabbi Martyn Adelberg of the Beth Israel Sinai Congregation of Racine in order to help in their understanding of Hebrew and Jewish customs and culture.
Performances of the play are March 15 and 16 at 7 p.m., and March 17 at 2 p.m., in the Union Grove performance center. Tickets will be $5 at the door.
There will also be a brief presentation about the students raising money and working alongside the honor flights program.
