Right after the village’s first accumulation of snow of the season hit Union Grove Monday afternoon, Public Works Director Mark Osmundsen confirmed Monday evening at the Village Board’s regular meeting that Union Grove is ready for the winter season.
“The temperatures that we saw, we weren’t worried about anything,” Osmundsen said Nov. 11, adding: “We were ready in case we did have something. Salt is on the trucks.”
Osmundsen reported the Village received 350 tons of salt at the beginning of November in preparation for the winter season.
During Monday’s storm, the village was ready and came close to needing some of that salt put on the roads, but ultimately it was determined that salt application wasn’t necessary, Osmundsen said. “We normally use 500 tons of salt per season,” he added.
Meanwhile, village leaf collection is continuing, Osmunden said, noting that converting trucks from leaf collection capability to snow removal takes a day.
“What we usually do is have one truck ready for salt because the other ones are actually picking up leaves, but we always have one ready with salt if needed,” Osmundsen added.
In addition to winter storm preparations, public works staff are beginning to put up holiday decorations for the Village and expect that task to be completed by Monday, Nov. 18.
However, holiday lighting of the village’s downtown tree will not be completed until December, according to Osmundsen. “There is a tree lighting ceremony closer to Christmas,” Osmundsen said. “The tree that will be used is the tree at the Village square right now.”
He also noted that winter parking regulations for the village began Nov. 15, and residents need to observe even- and odd-side parking rules even when there is snow accumulation.
Residents must park on the even-numbered side of a street on the night prior to even-numbered dates. Village officials are asking residents to be mindful of which side they plan to park on by 2 a.m.
