WW II vets’ names sought for program booklet
The Traveling World War II Memorial, transported by the Pillars of Honor, Inc., will be at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in Union Grove on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m.
Sponsored by Racine and Kenosha County, the event will include a formal presentation of the colors, live patriotic musical performances, a historical presentation of the WW II Memorial, guest speakers, members of the military and representatives from veteran service organizations, Racine County Executive James Ladwig announced in a media release.
The Traveling Monument is an original-scale 8-foot by 8-foot model of the WW II Memorial in Washington D.C., designed by world renowned architect Fredrick St. Fiorian.
The model’s visit to this area gives veterans and their families who are not able to visit the actual WW II Memorial an opportunity to visit the Monument.
The event is open to the public. Veterans and their family members are specifically encouraged to attend.
“Our WW II veterans are members of this country’s greatest generation, and it is important that we recognize and pay tribute to them,” Ladwig added.
“This event is an excellent opportunity for World War II veterans to see their Memorial, to share with their colleagues and to reflect upon their service to our country during one of the most trying times in the history of the United States,” he said.
Pillars of Honor is a not-for-profit organization with a sole purpose to provide the long-overdue respect and honor to WW II veterans who have served their country. It operates with no employees via a board of directors and 100 percent volunteers.
All WW II veterans who would like their names printed in the Sept. 8 program booklet should submit their full name and branch of service to their county Veterans Service Officer by Wednesday, Aug. 28.
Submissions can be emailed to [email protected] or by calling (262) 638-6667.
