For the second time in a period of just nine days, Racine County sheriff’s deputies rescued a suspected drug overdose victim using Narcan.
Early Thursday deputies responded to a call of a possible overdose at a home in the 16000 block of Plank Road in the Town of Yorkville.
The wife of the victim had called 911 to report that her husband was passed out on the floor of their garage, was struggling to breathe and may have overdosed on pills, according to a news release issued by the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies who responded found the man unresponsive and barely breathing. A deputy administered a dose of the nasal spray naloxone hydrochloride (Narcan) – a drug that reverses the effects of opiates – prior to the arrival of the Union Grove/Yorkville Rescue Squad, according to officials.
Rescue personnel then gave the man a second dose and he eventually regained consciousness before he was transported to Wheaton Franciscan Hospital in Racine, the release said.
Sheriff’s official said because the investigation is ongoing, additional information would not be immediately released.
On Aug. 19, deputies answered a similar call – this time for a report of a 20-year-old woman who was found unconscious and not breathing at a residence in the Town of Raymond.
A dispatcher provided instructions for family members to perform CPR on the victim until deputies arrived.
The woman was still not breathing when deputies arrived and gave the woman a dose of Narcan, according to a department news release.
“Within moments of the Narcan being administered, she regained consciousness and prior to being transported to the hospital she was conscious and talking with rescue staff,” the release said.
Deputies began carrying Narcan in their squad cars earlier this year. The program was funded by a grant.
Another example of great leadership from the Sheriff.
