Windy conditions led to a shed and marsh fire that broke out near 21640 Schroeder Road, Kansasville, around 2 p.m., April 10.
Kansasville Fire Chief Scott Remer said a small, controlled burn was being done by the owners near the north side of a shed on their property.
Winds blowing out of the northeast sent sparks up into the attic of the shed, Remer explained.
Firefighters quickly responded with manpower, water and engines, knocking down the fire before it could spread to two nearby homes or further into a grassy marsh area. The fire in the shed was mainly contained to the rafters.
Besides Kansasville, other departments involved were Union Grove, Town of Burlington, Paris, Silver Lake and Salem. “We utilized everybody who was there,” Remer said.
Remer offered two words of advice to Kansasville/Brighton residents about burning on days, like April 10, which have a “high” fire danger rating – as posted online by the Department of Natural Resources.
The “high” fire danger warning is due to conditions that make fires hard to control. On such high-danger days: “Don’t burn, don’t burn, don’t burn,” Remer cautioned.
