The third full season of the Union Grove Farmers Market opens on Tuesday, June 3, in the Village Square on Highway 45 (Main Street at 10th Avenue). The market continues, rain or shine, cold or hot, every Tuesday, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., through Oct. 14.
Shoppers will find seasonal fresh vegetables, summer fruits, cut flowers, honey, marinades and cooking herbs, handmade fudge and cashew crunch, bird houses, pumpkins and fall decorations, kettle corn popped on site and much more.
It is not too late to become a vendor for the whole season or for a few dates. Daily rate is $12 for a 10-foot by 10-foot space on which to set up your own pop-up tent.
The Helping Hands group at Union Grove Elementary School will again operate a lemonade stand at the market, with donations accepted for a community garden being developed behind the school.
Bake sales
New this year is the opportunity for churches and non-profit groups to sponsor a bake sale on one or more of the market dates. Some bake sale dates are still available.
Bake sale dates already scheduled are: Trinity Lutheran Women of WELS, June 17 and Sept. 16; Yorkville United Methodist Church, June 24 and August 12; Circle of Catholic Women (St. Robert’s and St. Mary’s), July 22 and Aug. 26, and Union Grove Lioness, Sept. 9. Come and enjoy their homemade and home-baked goodies.
Weekly entertainment at 4 p.m.
Shoppers are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, relax and enjoy an hour of entertainment at 4 p.m., before or after shopping at the market. There are still some openings for local singers, musicians and other entertainers to perform at this local venue.
Here are some already-scheduled favorites:
Entertainment on June 3 features local singer and guitarist, Linda Rae Slife, who has recorded three CDs of her original songs in Nashville. A teacher by profession, retired from Union Grove Elementary School, Linda Rae wrote “Amigo, my Friend” about pets and friendship. “Havin’ Fun” deals with growing up and how kids are enjoying the process, but for some parents it seems to go by too quickly. Her “Faith Songs” CD includes songs about her volunteer experiences with the Appalachia Service Project (ASP) for over 13 years.
June 10 entertainment will be Larry Fish, known as Punka and the Rattlebones. He plays percussion and harmonica to accompany recorded old-time music such as polka, waltz and fox trot. The bones are real – Wisconsin deer legs, elk mule deer and bison – and make a very unique sound when played as castanets, xylophone or drums. Go to YouTube to see and hear Punka and the Rattlebones.
June 17 entertainment will be “Music with Libby,” singing a variety of songs by favorite artists such as Patsy Cline, Judy Garland and Etta James; and music from the 70s and 80s. Libby Wilcox is the lead singer of the musical duo called Cork N Cleavage.
June 24 entertainment will be 2011 Racine County Fair Idol Mike Vyvyan. Mike is a Union Grove resident who sings with the choir at Yorkville United Methodist Church, as well as the church’s a cappella groups called “Rhythm & Praise” and “Hims of Harmony.” Mike enjoys Saturday night karaoke singing with his daughter Danyelle, who was the 2009 Racine County Fair Idol.
July 22 entertainment will be “County Crossings,” a 12-member band representing five counties, which plays an eclectic mix of Celtic, old time, bluegrass and world music. The variety of musical instruments includes fiddles, guitar, banjo, mandolin, hammered dulcimer, bowed psaltery with autoharp, penny whistle, keyboard and bodhran; plus vocalist. Some of the band members have been playing together since 2002, producing music with “a bit o’ Irish.”
Sept. 23 entertainment will be the Union Grove Village Drum Circle, led by Scott Cincotta, retired Union Grove High School band director, who has been a drummer for over 50 years. You can just observe, but you are also invited to sit in the circle playing drums and hand percussion.
Cincotta will guide the group in rhythms, rhythm-based activities and games. No experience necessary. Come celebrate life, community, friendships and music making.
Most of these entertainers are scheduled for two or more dates during the Union Grove Farmers Market season. Come to the heart of downtown Union Grove and enjoy this local talent while supporting our local produce growers.
