The Marching Broncos of Union Grove Union High School will join more than 30 high school bands from across the state that will march onto the UW-Whitewater campus on Saturday, Oct. 18.
The teams will compete in the 30th annual Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) State Marching Band Championships at Forrest Perkins Stadium, starting at 11:45 a.m.
Saturday’s event is the first appearance at the state meet for the UGUHS students, noted Band Director Alex Vincer.
The Broncos are scheduled to perform at noon Saturday in the competition’s Novice class, which is reserved for first-time bands, so the kids can get used to the competitive format, he explained.
Saturday’s performance follows well-received performances by the group last year.
“We performed in Festival Class at two competitions last year (Waukesha South’s MarchFest and Greendale High School’s Marching Competition) and had a great time, so our band made the choice to ‘put some skin in the game’ and start performing for points,” Vincer said.
This year, a band camp was held for two weeks before school started, which was very successful, Vincer said.
“We are looking forward to holding a longer band camp next year so we can perform that much better next year.”
On Oct 11, the band competed in the 26th annual Cudahy Marching Competition, competing in a class with Wisconsin Lutheran, which has a similar-sized band, Vincer said.
“We earned second place in the Class A division on Saturday evening, and we all had a blast seeing all of the other field show productions that those bands performed.”
The Marching Broncos’ production is titled “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: The Music of Elton John” and features the tunes “Funeral for a Friend,” “Love Lies Bleeding,” “Your Song” and “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting.” The drum major is Katrina Hermann; color guard instructor is Haley Peronto.
You can catch the group perform at home on Monday, Oct. 27, 7 p.m., when it hosts a local “Home Show” featuring pep band tunes and its last performance of the marching show on the UGHS Football Field. Admission is free, and free hot chocolate will be served.
