Student, 14, in custody; school to reopen Wednesday
A 14-year-old Yorkville Elementary School student was in Racine County juvenile detention Tuesday after allegedly leaving a threatening note in a school bathroom.
Sheriff’s officials evacuated the school after learning at 8:40 a.m. Tuesday about the handwritten note, which made reference to a gun and a bomb, according to a news release issued by the Racine County Sheriff’s Office.
Students and staff were transported by buses to Union Grove Elementary School. Parents were notified and were able to arrange to pick up their children there.
Bomb squads from Kenosha and Milwaukee counties assisted with an extensive search of the school and grounds. No weapons or bombs were discovered during the search, the release said.
“Preliminary investigation appears to indicate this act may have been a prank by the 14-year-old and there is no immediate threat to any staff or other students,” the release said.
The school is tentatively scheduled to open as usual Wednesday.
Tuesday’s threat marks the second in Southeast Wisconsin in as many days. On Monday, John Long Middle School in Grafton was evacuated after a threat was written on a bathroom stall.
