A company specializing in environmental remediation could be tapped to assist in downtown redevelopment efforts in Union Grove. But the proposal is on the back burner for the time being.
The Village Board was slated to discuss a contract for ongoing environmental services as work on existing and new sites takes place in the heart of the community.
Milwaukee-based Symbiont presented the village with a $7,000 proposed service contract, but Clerk-Treasurer Jill Kopp said the Village Board neither discussed nor acted on the company’s document when elected officials met June 12.
At this point, it remains uncertain whether the village will enlist the services of Symbiont or another firm specializing in environmental services. Input from outside entities, including the Racine County Economic Development Corporation, could help in solidifying future decisions.
If the company is tapped in the future for expertise, it could assist in redeveloping some areas in the village that might be in need of environmental remediation.
As part of its pitch to village officials, Symbiont Project Manager Gregory Waggle and Vice President Patrick Carnahan said the firm would liaise with all outside parties, including RCEDC, the state Department of Natural Resources and other organizations.
In other business this week, the Village Board:
- Gave Jennifer Ditscheit, executive director of the Greater Union Grove Area Chamber of Commerce, the green light to use village-owned property to install “open for business” signage as construction work picks up steam.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is beginning reconstruction of Highway 45, which cuts through the heart of Union Grove. The signage is aimed at mitigating the impact the work will have on local business owners.
- Named resident Scott Butler to the village Plan Commission.
- Withheld taking action at this time on building code violations at 1020 and 1030 Main St. Jim Deluca owns the buildings.
Kopp said discussion of the violations “will be continued to a future meeting to see if there is any compliance.” Kopp in her recount of the meeting said Deluca had indicated the work is slated for completion by the end of the week of June 19.
- Heard a report on a recent Water, Waste Water, Storm Water, Streets and Parks Committee meeting. The panel took a number of issues, including new plantings at Village Square Park.
As outlined in the report, a resident has approached village officials and proposed donating a 10-by-12-foot blue spruce within the park, which could be used in the future for holiday festivities.
“The thought process was to plant the donated tree in an appropriate spot to let it grow while still using the current tree for the holiday lighting,” Kopp wrote in the report. “Once the donated tree reached an appropriate height, the other tree would be cut down.”
The panel also reviewed plans to paint the municipal water tower. One proposal on the table hovers around $33,500.
The company submitting the quote, Maguire Iron Inc., has painted Union Grove’s water tower in the past.
