A hair-pulling food fight broke out in the cafeteria of Waterford High School Oct. 27, resulting in about a dozen student suspensions.

Municipal citations for disorderly conduct are being issued to eight girls – all believed to be freshmen – who were identified as participating in the fight, Waterford Police Chief Tom Ditscheit said Tuesday afternoon.

On Oct. 28, the eight girls were issued school suspensions, according to District Superintendent Keith Brandstetter.

By Monday morning, another three students had been suspended for contributing to and encouraging the melee, according to Principal Eric Blake.

More suspensions are likely as the investigation into the incident by school officials continues.

Ditscheit said it will be school officials – not police – who decide the penalties issued to students identified as either videotaping the melee or providing food for the fight.

It all started with students talking back and forth on Facebook, the online social media site, according to Blake.

“We had kids utilizing Facebook to get heated up, get their discussion going back and forth,” Blake said.

On Oct. 28, one classroom teacher overheard a girl talking about tossing a carton of milk at another student in the cafeteria.

The girl’s parents were contacted, and she agreed not to act, Blake said.

But within minutes of that promise, the fight began, he said.

  2. I’d like to correct you on this article. The fight broke out on Thursday, October 20th, not the 28th as per the article. The talk did not start on Facebook and the girls were not Freshman.
Not sure where you got your information, but it should be corrected.
