‘Parents Speak Up’ meetings set this month

Western Racine County Health Department is offering a free program for parents to gain information on how to discuss healthy relationships with their teens.

Parents will receive tips on how to start conversations about abstinence, safe sex, and good decision-making.

All participants will receive a guide titled, “Parents Speak Up.”

The Parents Speak Up program will be offered at Waterford Public Library, 101 N. River St., from 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 11.

The program will also be offered at Union Grove Middle School on Monday, Jan. 16, from 6:15 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the school library, 1745 Milldrum. The program is for parents only.

There will be light refreshments and a raffle giveaway.

Studies show that 66 percent of teens who have had sex wish they had waited longer.

Racine County continues to have one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the state of Wisconsin. Sexually transmitted infections are also widespread throughout Racine County; chlamydia and gonorrhea are increasingly common in young people.

One in four sexually active teens will experience a sexually transmitted infection.

Teens report they look to their parents for guidance in making healthy decisions more than they look to their friends, the media, or their siblings.

Nine out of 10 teens said it would have been easier to postpone sexual activity if they had been able to have more open, honest conversations with their parents.

Six out of 10 teens say their parents are their role models for healthy, responsible relationships. Parents have a very important influence on whether their teenagers become pregnant or cause a pregnancy
