Faced with a projected $612,000 reduction in state aid this school year, officials in the Waterford Graded School District are scrutinizing expenses in 2012-13 and beyond.
“When we talk about strategizing and sending a message to the community, I want people to be informed,” Superintendent Chris Joch said at a recent Personnel and Finance Committee meeting.
“I want people to know we’ve bent over backwards.”
The projected reduction in state aid – a primary source of income for the district – is further exacerbated by a drop in enrollment by about 100 students.
District officials have been working to shore up budget gaps through a number of efforts, including transferring employee pension benefits into a trust account and taking the expense off the general operating budget.
In the years ahead, parents also might be asked to contribute more toward field trips and extra-curricular activities as costs continue to rise.
