Steve Carini, known as Milwaukee’s bonsai guru, will introduce gardeners to the ancient Japanese growing techniques at Heritage Flower Farm in Waterford township on Saturday, May 12, at 1 p.m.
Carini will demonstrate which trees to use for bonsai, crown and root pruning, wiring to shape branches, potting and care of these miniaturized trees and shrubs.
His presentation includes both a Powerpoint explanation and an actual demonstration on living trees.
Bonsai is perfect for the many of the latest trends in gardening, which include container gardens, small space gardening, fairy gardens and railroad gardens, according to Betty Adelman, owner of Heritage Flower Farm.
“These picturesque trees can live for hundreds of years,” she said.
And Heritage Flower Farm is the perfect venue for a bonsai workshop, added Carini.
“Betty’s farm is a great place for people like myself and so many others who want something a little different than the usual hybrids available in many other garden centers,” Carini said.
“So, bonsai is a natural for her place.”
The public is invited to attend the program. There is a fee of $5.
