It’s been awhile since Steve Denman entertained any youthful plans of going out and setting the world on fire.
Instead, for 33 years, the long-time Waterford Village firefighter has stayed close to home, volunteering his time and talents to protect the village – and nearby communities – from the dangers of fire and other emergencies.
Monday night, Denman notified the Village Board of his intention to step down April 1 as Village of Waterford Fire and Rescue Department Chief, a position he has held for 18 years.
Denman’s current elected term as chief runs to September.
But Denman also has some irons in the fire that impact the timing of his retirement. Denman is one of four candidates seeking election to the Village Board in the April 3 spring election.
Regardless of the results of the election, Denman plans to stay around and stay active in the community.
After retirement, he’ll remain with the Department in an administrative position and focus on fire prevention and investigation, Denman explained.
More than 25 years ago, Denman was among the initial group of firefighters and police officers who established the Racine County Fire Investigation Task Force.
Denman had served as the Department’s fire investigator years ago before becoming Waterford’s assistant fire chief.
“I look forward to continuing to serve my community in the coming years,” Denman said in his resignation letter to the board.
