About 42 vendors were on hand June 7 at the Cotton Exchange Restaurant in Waterford for the 10th annual Public Works Equipment Expo hosted by the Town of Waterford.
The day’s events gave vendors and municipal representatives a chance to examine up close the latest in two-way communication systems, chippers, mowers, dump trucks, snow removal and road construction equipment – just to name a few.
Personal contacts were made, faces placed with people’s names, possible deals started and needs and wants shared.
Charles Miller, a consultant with the state Department of Transportation, conducted a one-hour seminar on DOT compliance.
And lunch was served to anyone still hungry after hours of passing by the outdoor grilling offered by Payne & Dolan representatives.
“It’s a great way to meet our neighbors and help us all be prepared for whatever tomorrow may bring,” said Ken Hinz, supervisor of the the Town of Waterford’s Department of Public Works.
About 50 municipalities participated this year, along with 100-plus customers from Racine, Kenosha, Walworth and Waukesha counties,
Hinz described the Expo as smart planning for whatever unpredictable challenges the future may bring.
“Every year, communities are at the hands of Mother Nature and when disaster hits, it is imperative that neighboring departments come to each other’s aid by lending a hand,” Hinz explained.
To do that quickly and effectively, “we need to network and share ideas and thoughts to uphold the highest standard of service to our own and our neighboring communities,” Hinz said.
Each year, the Expo offers a different informational theme to share with those who attend, Hinz noted.
This year’s seminar focused on DOT Compliance for area Public Works departments.
The 2013 Expo will focus on preparations needed for Wisconsin retirement options.

“It’ll be another great show,” Heinz predicted.
