With outside assistance, Village of Waterford officials will try to track down the source of odors emitting from a multi-tenant building at 228 N. Milwaukee St.
Village staff and elected officials last week discussed the issue and came to a consensus of how to proceed.
Outside assistance will be sought by the Western Racine County Health Department and, potentially, the state Department of Health and the state Department of Natural Resources.
Professionals within those agencies will be asked to conduct testing to see if there is a public health concern at the property.
Village Administrator Rebecca Ewald said she has been in contact with the property owner about the status of the building.
Ewald brought the issue, which has been discussed in the past, before the Village Board to ensure all officials were on the same page.
“We have to do something about this,” Trustee Roy Gawlitta said. “This has been going on for too long.”
Tiling underneath the building has been cited as one potential source for the odors. Other details – including drainage plans for the property – have been under review.
Surveying of the overall site is believed to have taken place as well.
Village Attorney Marcia Hasenstab cautioned against doing any actual work within the property.
But she agreed thorough testing should be conducted sooner rather than later. “To continually put it off is going to be a concern,” Hasenstab said.
Since she has received consensus, Ewald said she will continue to seek out remedies for the property. If the village is charged for any of the testing work, it will be charged directly to the property owner.
“Since we’re all on the same page, we’ll just continue to proceed,” Ewald said
