The Waterford Waterway Management District (WWMD) has been awarded a $59,040 grant from Southeastern Wisconsin Fox River Commission to fund a feasibility study to investigate the possibility and opportunities available for Eco-System Restoration on Tichigan Lake and the Fox River.
Beginning July 5, WWMD will utilize the grant monies toward Phase II of its Eco-System Restoration Feasibility Study, which includes soil sample collection, tests, test results and reports.
The Phase II work focuses on the quality of the soils that may be handled during removal if there were to be a dredging project. The soil samples are used for testing required by Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) as part of an application to consider a dredge permit.
The $59,040 grant is calculated on a 90/10 cost sharing grant.
The Fox River Commission will pick up 90 percent of the $65,600 in total estimated costs ($59,040); WWMD will contribute 10 percent ($6,560).
At this time, the areas identified by the WDNR to obtain sample sediments occur in various locations of Lake Tichigan and the Fox River above and below the hard pan of the waterway; some areas will require the assistance of a drilling contractor.
Graef USA has been chosen by WWMD as the engineering firm to complete Phase II Feasibility Study work.
WWMD is a special unit of government regulated by Wisconsin State Statutes, with over 1,100 riparian properties located in the district.
Its mission is to “maintain, protect, and improve the quality of the Waterford Waterway, its fisheries, its watershed, and boundaries; while maintaining the highest possible quality of living experience for its residents.”
