Police reviewed Waterford Public Library surveillance tapes to try and identify who supplied heroin to a 42-year-old Waterford man who subsequently died of a heroin overdose.

Charged with manufacturing/delivering heroin in the matter is Aaron D. Johnson, 37, of Waterford.

According to the criminal complaint filed May 28 in Racine County Circuit Court:

The victim went to the home of an acquaintance on First Street about 11:10 p.m., May 18, where he collapsed and stopped breathing.

Deputies who responded to a 911 call observed signs that the victim was having a heroin overdose. He was transported for treatment to Burlington Memorial and St. Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee, where he later died.

The victim’s parents supplied deputies with the name of an acquaintance whom the victim may have been with.

The acquaintance reportedly told deputies he had met the victim at the Waterford Library. He said the victim was upset because the victim had given Aaron Johnson a debit card and cell phone to use to buy some heroin for him.

Surveillance footage at the library reportedly shows Johnson arriving at the library on a motorcycle and making contact with the victim and his acquaintance.

Johnson reportedly placed several items on a table, and an exchange of items was then made.

When interviewed, Johnson reportedly admitted delivering heroin to the victim at the library.

Johnson reportedly admitted that he withdrew $120 using the victim’s debit card, then used some of the money for gas and bought $100 worth of heroin. He reportedly admitted giving $50 worth of heroin to the victim and keeping $50 worth to use himself.

Deputies report Johnson admitted he uses heroin and has overdosed several times.

If convicted of the heroin delivery charge, he faces a maximum fine of $25,000; 12-1/2 years in prison; or both.

Johnson was additionally charged as a repeat offender with felony possession of narcotics and misdemeanor possession of paraphernalia, after deputies arrested him May 29 on a warrant for failing to appear for his first court appearance.

In that traffic stop, deputies reportedly recovered 38 needles, three bags of heroin and numerous other drug-related items from Johnson’s car.

They reported Johnson admitted he shoots up heroin “every other day, twice a day.”

If convicted of the possession charges, Johnson additionally faces a maximum fine of $10,500; seven years, seven months in prison; or both.

Johnson appeared in court May 30 for initial appearances in both cases. A $20,000 cash bond is set in each case.

He was next due in court June 6 for preliminary hearings in both cases, where a judge could consider if the cases should move to trial.
