The Village of Waterford will hold a public meeting Monday, June 24, at 5:30 p.m., to hear residents’ comments and offer information about a new ordinance that:

• amends the village’s floodplain zoning;

• adopts a Dam Failure Analysis and Hydraulic Shadow Map created by Racine County, which owns the Waterford Dam; and

• rezones properties that are located in the hydraulic dam shadow to flood plain zoning.

A public hearing will follow the public meeting Monday night at the village board’s regularly scheduled meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m.

Letters advising affected property owners of the hearing were mailed out June 1, along with a set of commonly asked questions and their answers, noted Village Administrator Rebecca Ewald.

State law requires that areas downstream of a dam be zoned and regulated by the use of floodplain zoning, according to the village’s letter.

The village is now required to adopt the Racine County’s Dam Failure Analysis and Map into the Floodplain Zoning Code, and zone areas of the village that fall within the dam hydraulic shadow as floodway or floodplain fringe, in accordance with the map.

Residents are urged to attend the June 24 public meeting to learn the impact of the zoning ordinance as it relates to their property.
