In a special meeting April 25, the Town of Waterford Board unanimously appointed Nick Draskovich to fill the vacant supervisor seat.

The seat was left vacant after Tom Hincz moved up to Town Chairman after being elected April 2 to that position, which was previously held by Robert Langmesser, who retired.

Draskovich has been a member of the Town of Waterford Planning Commission for five years, noted Supervisor Dale Gauerke, and will be leaving the Plan Commission to join the Town Board.

“I think he’s done an excellent job as a commissioner,” Gauerke said. “He asks good questions, good follow-up, he seems to have a good grasp on those kinds of issues.”

In response to a question from Supervisor Lisa Jeschke pertaining to the local police department, Draskovich said though he has much to learn about the issue, he does support having a local police department.

“My interest is in the police department that we currently have,” he said. “I’d like to see it be successful and remain, but I have a lot to learn about each department in the town.

“If you’re excited about something, you’re going to learn and that excitement reflects on other people.”

According to Hincz, it was more practical for the board to appoint a candidate rather than hold a special election to fill the position.

“It would have taken weeks … we called this meeting as soon as we did because we have a lot on our plate and I think it’s important we fill that position,” Hincz said.

Five people, including Draskovich, provided written interest in the position.

Hincz stressed the importance of filling Town Board seats through a proper election in the future.

“What’s difficult for all of us up here is that at least in an election, the people are voting for this position,” he said.

“Myself, personally, it makes me kind of uncomfortable that we’re having to select out of five people, when hopefully, next time, anyone interested … would take the time to go through the election process.”

According to Hincz, two seats will be up for election in April 2014.
