Driver fails highway obstacle course test

A Waterford motorcyclist who failed to negotiate the orange barrels, tractor and lane barricades along a stretch of Highway 164 just west of Highway 36 has been charged with his fifth offense of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

According to the criminal complaint filed July 15 in Racine County Circuit Court:

Ratko Velickovic, 42, of Louis Street in the village, was found by an off-duty town officer to be bleeding from the head shortly before 1 a.m., July 5, with his motorcycle lying nearby on its side.

Deputies who responded reported a strong smell of intoxicants on Velickovic’s breath.

He was transported by Waterford Rescue to Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington for evaluation and preliminary treatment. He was then transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee for advanced treatment for a broken nose and broken orbital lobe, bleeding on the brain and a cut above an eye that required stitches.

Velickovic failed a standardized field sobriety test conducted at the Burlington hospital, and was cited for the OWI offense.

Velickovic made an initial appearance in court July 16, when probable cause was found that he committed the crime with which he is charged. A $5,000 signature bond was set.

He is next due in court July 31 for a preliminary hearing, when a judge can consider whether to advance the case to trial.
