A team of students from Waterford Union High School will participate in the 2013 Lake Sturgeon Bowl on Saturday, Feb. 9, at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
The bowl is a competitive event in a qualifying round for a national contest that challenges young marine science scholars to display their knowledge in geology, geography, social science, physics, biology, current events and chemistry. The local team will try to pick off the reigning national champs who hail from Wisconsin.
Teams compete for a variety of prizes, including field trips and classroom resources, and the first-place team receives an expense-paid trip to compete against other winning teams from across the country at the National Ocean Sciences Bowl www.nosb.org.
For the past four years, Wisconsin has produced the nation’s No. 1 team. That team, from Marshfield, last year visited Hawaii as their grand prize. Previous years have taken the central-Wisconsin teens to Puerto Rico, Panama and an Atlantic
Ocean cruise.
The program provides financial, academic and volunteer support for the event.
