Safety improvements, bike lanes and pedestrian accommodations are among the features touted Aug. 26 when state officials came to Waterford and discussed potential changes to the Highway 20 and 83 corridors.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) hosted its second of four public information meetings Aug. 26 at the Waterford Public Library.

More than 50 residents and business owners attended a portion of a two-hour open house.

In 2018, WisDOT is planning to reconstruct a 1.8-mile stretch of Highway 20, from Buena Park Road in Waterford to Milwaukee Avenue in Rochester.

“The purpose of the project is to improve safety, traffic flow, riding characteristics, intersection operation, sight distance and drainage throughout the corridor,” explained John Elkin, a project manager with engineering firm R.A. Smith National Inc.

WisDOT officials say a major reason for the reconstruction project is linked to current and projected traffic volumes. A projected traffic analysis through 2038 asserts the number of motorists traversing through the area could increase by as much as 2,500 people each day in some sections.
